The GWA Wingfoil World Tour recently electrified the shores of Gran Canaria with its much-anticipated Big Air World Championships, held from July 9th to 13th. This thrilling event, marking its second edition since its debut last year, saw 24 men and 11 women battle it out for the coveted world titles amid the strong, gusty winds of the Canary Islands.
A Star is Born: Nia Suardiaz Takes the Crown
One of the most memorable moments of the competition was when Nia Suardiaz emerged victorious as the new Women's World Champion in wing foiling. Under the blazing late afternoon sun, with waves crashing dramatically around the event site, Nia showcased her exceptional skills in a nail-biting final. The competition was fierce, with the lead shifting back and forth between Nia and the reigning 2023 champion, Mar de Arce.
Mar initially took the lead with an impressive display, but Nia responded with graceful gliding airs and perfectly executed 360s. In a stunning move, Mar soared to a height of 7.2 meters to regain her position. Yet, it was Nia's consistent and daring manoeuvres that ultimately secured her victory by a razor-thin margin of just 0.07 points.
Celebrating the Champions
Joining Nia on the podium were Mar de Arce, who took second place, and Maria Behrens, who finished third. The presence of three Duotone riders in the top spots underscored the brand's dominance and the high caliber of its athletes.

Reflecting on her triumph, Nia shared her thoughts:
"I came on the water before the flags, and it was super fun, but my first jump was terrible. I knew I wasn’t out of the competition and felt better as time went on. It’s one event, it’s different. I’m just going out and having fun, and it’s working."
Men's Competition: A Battle of Titans
The men’s Big Air final was equally thrilling, featuring top-tier athletes Christopher MacDonald (USA), Malo Guénolé (FRA), Bastien Escofet (FRA), and Benjamin May (GER). Despite battling an illness, Benjamin May put up a valiant fight but ultimately finished fourth.
